Find Your Voice Episode 2: Connect the Dots Between Your Favorite Things
Here are a few of my favorite things...
Ok, so if you're anything like me, you will obsess over certain things more than others. I may love that new Demi Lovato song, but I haven't watched any of her music videos. Meanwhile, I'm watching that Paramore video I love for the umpteenth time.
It's not just Instagram where we engage in an endless scroll, only stopping to HEART the things that really speak to us. Every day we encounter a ton of stimulation via the internet, tv, and our actual real lives.
Think of yourself as a filter. So much of what you see passes right by you, but some things you latch onto. It's why we binge watch The Office for the 8th time instead of trying that new Netflix original. It's why we make playlists of our favorite songs instead of listening to the radio. It's why we consistently order chocolate ice cream even though Ben and Jerry's has like 31 flavors (oh, that was Baskin Robbins, wasn't it?).
This week we're going to take a closer look at our very FAVORITE things, and start connecting the dots between them. What does Rainbow Fish have in common with Frida Kahlo? Who likes to cover their ice cream in sprinkles but their home decor is minimalist? YOU are the thing that these seemingly disparate things have in common.
Austin Kleon said, "You don’t get to pick your family, but you can pick your teachers and you can pick your friends and you can pick the music you listen to and you can pick the books you read and you can pick the movies you see. You are, in fact, a mashup of what you choose to let into your life. You are the sum of your influences. The German writer Goethe said, "We are shaped and fashioned by what we love.”"
We can think of these things as "ingredients" that are going into our artwork. And trust me - even if you and another artist both like Moulin Rouge, you are probably the only one who was also obsessed with the movie Flubber and practiced Tae Kwon Do. Those are the differences and nuances that will lead you to create art that's different than that other person on Instagram.
Watch the second episode here, and be sure to comment with your thoughts afterwards! Each week a random commenter will be selected to receive something special :D
Finally, don't forget to join the Facebook group so that you can be a part of the discussion! This whole process is so much easier if you have someone to talk it out with. You can find an invitation pinned to the top of my Taylor Lee Paints Facebook page here. It's called Find Your Voice with Taylor Lee if you'd rather type that into the search bar.
Well, that's all for today, kids!
I'm so excited for you to dig deep into your guilty pleasures to discover parts of your creative DNA.
