Rise and Fight
I've been getting asked about the tattoos on my wrist a lot, so I decided to answer that question formally today for the blog! PS, scroll down for this week's playlist (listen while you read)! The playlist is themed around songs that inspire me to keep moving forward.
I got these on a whim, actually, one day after class when I was in college. I was going through what I now recognize as an extremely manic day. I felt like it would be easier to shove pencils through my skin than to continue living and suffering in silent pain. I couldn't understand how I could wake up and put myself through life for one more day, and that's when I decided that I needed a mantra to tell myself when the going got rough.
Rise and Fight was what I decided to tell myself to do instead of surrendering to the temptation to give up. And even though I do not struggle with suicidal thoughts anymore and I've come very far with managing my mental illness, I have found that I still tell myself to rise and fight each day.
To me these words describe the intentional way I've chosen to live each day and to approach each problem. I choose to take an active role in my life instead of just letting whatever happen. I hope that if you are reading this, and if you have seen my art and heard my story, you will be inspired to do the same!
