Artist statement for the collection:
When I started painting these florals I experienced a sense of letting go. One of the major themes of my life is swinging between polar extremes: the controlled and the wild. I thought back to childhood a lot when making these because it represents a “wild” time for me.
My sister and I lived with my grandma until I was six. She watched us after school for many years while my mom worked to support us all. Almost daily I ran around my grandma’s expansive yard full of acorns and squirrels (one of which we rescued from the cat and raised on a milk bottle), playing games with imaginary friends and trapping lizards in her garden that was overflowing with azaleas and roses. I loved to fold elephant ear leaves and pluck apart roses petal by petal. She cultivated wild things, and I was one of them.
I hope these florals evoke a sense of wild wonder in your home!
